Digital transformation of Pitt Rivers Museum

The Pitt Rivers Museum has gone live with its Collections Management System (CMS), MuseumPlus, with the successful migration of their current digital content of approximately 950,000 records to this system. MuseumPlus, delivered through collaboration between IT Services and GLAM, enables the museum to effectively oversee the management, cataloguing and preservation of their digital collections. Training with the CMS users is nearly complete while DAMS (digital asset management system) training is scheduled to start in mid-May. The IT Learning Centre is working to create the latter, including training videos for users that show fundamental system functions, for example how to search in the system, talking through the configuration and how to upload images.

Integration with the museum’s DAMS (ResourceSpace) is currently underway as that system continues to be fully implemented.

This forms a significant milestone in the GLAM IT projects to transform the museum’s digital collections and asset systems, enabling;

  • New reports
  • Metadata sharing between CMS and DAMS
  • Object group sharing between CMS and DAMS
  • Custom views
  • Updated help text for all fields
  • Enhanced security and preservation of valuable digital assets and collections data
  • Improved management of data and images
